The Night Before Tax-mas… (And HMRC Is Coming to Town)
Cue the music. Dim the lights.
It’s April 5th.
And somewhere, across the land, performers, freelancers and self-employed souls are settling down for the night…
…dreaming not of sugar plums…
…but spreadsheets.
Because tomorrow — April 6th — is the big one.
Yes, that moment you’ve all been waiting for…
Making Tax Digital has entered the building.
“Ooh, what’s this under the tree?”
Imagine it.
You wake up. You rush downstairs.
Heart racing.
“What has HMRC left me this year?!”
A shiny new system!
Quarterly updates!
Digital record keeping!
…Oh. Joy.
All jokes aside… this one matters
Behind the theatrics, this isn’t something to ignore or hope quietly goes away backstage.
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is rolling in from April 2026, and if you’re in the first group, it will affect how you report your income going forward.
So before you dramatically faint onto a chaise longue, here’s what actually matters:
Step 1: Are you in the show? (a.k.a. are you mandated?)
This is your first cue.
You’ll need to take part if your combined self-employed and/or property income is over £50,000 before expenses (based on your 2024/25 tax return).
If that’s you… congratulations. You’ve got a starring role.
Step 2: Choose your co-star (your software)
Gone are the days of “I’ll sort it in January.”
You’ll need MTD-compatible software to:
- Keep digital records
- Submit quarterly updates
- Stay on HMRC’s good side (always a wise career move)
Don’t panic — I’ve already done the hard bit
Before you start Googling in a blind panic or asking your friend’s cousin’s dog walker what they use…
I’ve put together a straightforward guide to help you:
- Understand what’s changing
- Work out if you’re affected
- Compare software options
- Get set up without the drama

Final call (from the wings)
Yes, we can have a little fun with it.
Yes, HMRC timing does feel a bit like a pantomime plot twist.
But this is one cue you don’t want to miss.
So take a moment, check where you stand, and get yourself ready.
Because unlike a bad review…
This one you can’t ignore and hope it disappears.
