If I had a pound for every time I’ve sung my feelings instead of submitting them, I’d still be a proud tax-paying self-employed opera singer … just with a slightly bigger wardrobe of sequins.
So when I spotted this What’s On Stage article asking West End stars what they’d sing from the London Palladium balcony, I couldn’t resist the daydream.
Me, centre stage, one mic, one moment.
But here’s the problem: I can’t decide what to sing!
It’s a toss-up between…
“You’ll Never Walk Alone” from Carousel — the unofficial anthem of freelancers who’ve stared down a January deadline and come out stronger.
Or
“Climb Every Mountain” from The Sound of Music — because if you’ve ever wrestled with a spreadsheet at midnight, you know that feeling.
It’s a big decision. Bigger, even, than whether to file early or wait until the 30th and rely on caffeine and blind hope.
But that’s the joy of being a singing accountant — sometimes the only way to process it all is with a key change and a cup of tea.
So I’m asking you…
If you had five minutes on the Palladium balcony to sing one show tune — what would it be?
Would you belt out Defying Gravity at your clients?
Croon Money, Money, Money at HMRC?
Or whisper I Dreamed A Dream as you stare into your bookkeeping app?
I want to know — and if you’re brave, give me your tax-themed parodies too.
Because while the world of self-employment can feel like a solo, you never really sing alone.
