Well, here’s something you don’t hear an accountant say very often: Tax might actually be the hero in this story.
Yes, I know. Usually when I mention HMRC, it’s followed by a sharp intake of breath or a quiet groan. But this time, it seems… dare I say it… they’re on our side. Rare, I know.
According to a recent report by Reuters, the West End has officially outpaced Broadway in both audience numbers and post-pandemic recovery. In 2023, a record-breaking 17.1 million people attended West End shows—and that number is only expected to grow.
London’s theatre scene is having a moment. An extended run, if you will.
And one of the key reasons?
A government decision to make pandemic-era theatre tax reliefs permanent from April 2025. These tax breaks give productions up to 45% relief on their costs, making London a much more attractive (and affordable) place to stage a show compared to New York.
So what does that mean for performers?
More shows. More investment. More roles. More workshops, tours, and regional theatre buzz as producers look beyond the capital for additional capacity.
In short: more opportunity.
Yay!
It also means the UK industry is seeing a creative boom. New writing, bolder productions, and more diverse casts are taking to the stage thanks to reduced financial risk.
Now, I’m not saying tax is fun (even I have limits). But in this case? It’s proving to be a genuine force for good. And that’s not something I get to say very often, so I’m going to enjoy it while it lasts.
