I know tax talk isn’t as exciting as a standing ovation, but stick with me – this could save you from a nasty encore with HMRC.
1. Overlap Relief: A Delayed Entrance (No booing required!)
If you’re waiting for HMRC to send your overlap relief figures, don’t panic!
If you requested them on or before 31 January 2025 and they’re still “lost in the wings,” you’ve got an extension until 28th February 2025 to file your Self Assessment tax return without a late-filing penalty.
However, HMRC’s idea of an interval is rather expensive—interest on any unpaid tax will still start from 1 February 2025, so if you owe anything, best to pay up before the curtain falls on your bank balance.
If you’re stuck in limbo, HMRC suggests filing using provisional figures—a bit like improvising, but with receipts. You can fine-tune it later.
2. Storm Éowyn: dramatic plot twist alert!
If Storm Éowyn took a wrecking ball to your tax plans (power cuts, travel nightmares, general chaos), there’s a chance to claim a “reasonable excuse” for filing late. HMRC does have a heart—sometimes—and severe weather is on their list of acceptable reasons for missing a deadline.
That said, they’ll expect you to get your act together as soon as possible and submit an appeal with proof that you were genuinely affected (perhaps a soggy tax return salvaged from floodwaters? Kidding… sort of).
What to Do Next?
If you’re still waiting on HMRC: Let’s discuss whether to file a provisional return so you don’t miss the deadline.
If you’re dreading interest charges: Let’s work out a payment plan before HMRC starts humming the tune to Show Me the Money.
If the storm stole the show: We can help you appeal any penalties—because nobody should be punished for an act of God (or just terrible British weather).
The tax deadline drama doesn’t have to end in tragedy. If you need help, give me a shout – preferably before the fat lady sings.
