MTD – What Is It? A Simple Guide for Performers.

In this video, we’re looking at Making Tax Digital, often shortened to MTD, and what it means for performers.

You may have heard the term already, but not be entirely sure what it involves or whether it applies to you. Making Tax Digital is part of HMRC’s move towards a more digital tax system. The aim is to make it easier for people to keep accurate records and report their income more regularly.

For performers, that matters because many people in the creative industries are self-employed, have more than one income stream, and often have expenses that need to be tracked carefully throughout the year.

Under Making Tax Digital, eligible self-employed individuals and landlords will need to keep digital records and submit updates to HMRC using compatible software. So rather than dealing with everything in one rush at the end of the tax year, the process becomes more regular and more digital.

That might sound like a big change, especially if you currently rely on spreadsheets, paper records, or sorting everything out close to the deadline. But with the right systems in place, it can actually make things much more manageable.

The key point is that good record-keeping becomes even more important. Keeping track of your income, expenses, invoices, receipts, and business costs as you go will help you stay organised and reduce stress later on.

For performers, this could include things like income from gigs, teaching, freelance work, touring, session work, performances, and other creative projects. It could also include allowable expenses such as travel, equipment, training, marketing, subscriptions, and other costs related to your work.

Making Tax Digital is really about moving away from last-minute tax admin and towards a more up-to-date way of managing your finances.

At Performance Accountancy, we work with performers and creatives every day, so we understand that your finances do not always fit a standard pattern.

That is why it is important to have support that makes sense for your industry and for the way you work.

Getting prepared early can make a big difference. Understanding what MTD is, what records you need to keep, and what tools are available will help you feel much more confident when the changes apply to you.
